Heiligerlee, war memorial: Battle of Heiligerlee, by Joseph Geefs based on a design by Johannes Hinderikus Egenberger

The battle of Heiligerlee in today's province of Groningen on May 23, 1568 took place at the beginning of the Eighty Years War , which only ended with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 and led to the independence of the Netherlands .

The Dutch rebels relied on an army of 3900 infantrymen and 200 cavalrymen , led by Ludwig and Adolf von Nassau , two brothers of William I of Orange-Nassau .

The army of the governor of the Spaniards in Groningen, Johann de Ligne , Count von Aremberg , consisted of 3200 infantrymen and 20 cavalrymen. The governor of the Spaniards avoided the confrontation at first and waited for reinforcements, but on May 23 the battle broke out. Aremberg lost between 1,500 and 2,000 men, while the rebels lost only 50 men, including Adolf von Nassau, whose death is mentioned in the Dutch national anthem Het Wilhelmus : "Graef Adolff is ghebleven, in Vriesland in the slaech." Also Johann de Ligne fell on the battlefield.

The army of the Dutch rebels did not take any cities and was defeated on July 21, 1568 at the Battle of Jemgum .
