Heiligerlee is a small town with 1,340 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the east of the province of Groningen in the Netherlands , about 3 km west of the city of Winschoten . In terms of local politics, Heiligerlee belongs to the Oldambt municipality .

In Heiligerlee began on May 23, 1568 the battle of heiligerlee the Eighty Years' War between the Dutch Republic and Spain . In this first battle 4200 Wassergeusen under the leadership of Count Ludwig and Adolf von Oranien-Nassau , brothers of Wilhelm von Oranien , fought against 3200 well-trained soldiers of the Catholic-Spanish army commanded by Count Johann von Ligne . The Geusen won; but Adolf of Orange-Nassau fell in this battle.

To commemorate the battle you can find a monument in Heiligerlee, which was erected on the 300th anniversary of the battle in 1868 by King Wilhelm III. was revealed.

A Premonstratensian nunnery (Mons Sinaï) had existed in Heiligerlee since the 13th century and was founded by the Schildwolde mother monastery . Today only the reconstructed canals can be seen.
