Oldambt is a municipality in the east of the Dutch province of Groningen . It was created on January 1, 2010 through the merger of the previous municipalities of Reiderland , Scheemda and Winschoten . It has 38,124 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019). The residents themselves chose the name, which comes from the region of the same name .

Community structure

The municipality consists of the following districts:

  • Blauwestad (settlement only in 2007)
  • Reiderland with Bad Nieuweschans, Beerta, Drieborg, Finsterwolde and Nieuw-Beerta
  • Scheemda with Heiligerlee, Midwolda, Nieuw Scheemda, Nieuwolda, Oostwold and Westerlee
  • Winschoten

Neighboring communities, Oldambt as a border community

Neighboring municipalities in the province of Groningen are, starting in the south and clockwise: Bellingwedde , Pekela , Menterwolde , Slochteren and Delfzijl . In the northeast follows the Dollart , and in the east the neighboring municipality of Bunde in Lower Saxony. Emden am Dollart is opposite Oldambt .

Cora-Yfke Sikkema (GroenLinks) has been the acting mayor of the municipality since January 29, 2019 . To their college include the Assistant Secretary Laura Broekhuizen-Smit (PvdA), Bard Boon (Party for the North), Erich Wünker (VVD), Kees Swagerman (SP) and the municipal secretary Herman Groothuis.

Pronunciation of the community name

The municipality was the first in the Netherlands to receive a name in the dialect used in the province of Groningen . Oldambt means Oud Ambt in Dutch , "Old Office" in German.
