history

On February 11, 1765, the mayor of the city of Groningen decided to dig a canal between Ter Apel and Groningen. Because Groningen was traditionally the only real city in the northeast of the Netherlands (“Stad en Land”), the term “city” meant the city of Groningen. That is why the canal was called Stadskanaal (city canal).

The Stadskanaal was completed in 1856. Houses were built along the canal, which together formed a village that was soon given the name Stadskanaal .

The peat extraction was initially of economic importance. When the bog was completely excavated, the village became the center of the potato starch industry. After the Second World War , the industrial orientation changed when Philips opened a factory to manufacture picture tubes . As a result, the church grew very strongly. Today Stadskanaal is a central location in the area because there are many facilities such as a hospital and comprehensive schools.

In 1905 Stadskanaal received a railway connection from the direction of Gieten , further routes of the Noordoosterlocaalspoorweg-Maatschappij (NOLS) network to Emmen , Veendam and Ter Apel were opened in the following years, but many were closed again before 1950. In 1955 passenger traffic on the route to Groningen ended , in 1990 goods traffic ended, but since 1994 museum trains have been running again to Veendam in the summer.

The Dutch composer Cornelis Dopper was born in Stadskanaal in 1870 .

The Nelli Cooman Games have been held annually in Stadskanaal since 1997 . In 2012 the municipality hosted the IPC European Championships , in 2013 the IWAS World Games and in 2015 the IWAS World Junior Games .
