Westerwolde is a municipality in the east of the Dutch province of Groningen . It was created on January 1, 2018 through the merger of the previous municipalities of Bellingwedde and Vlagtwedde . The seat of the community is in Sellingen, a branch in Wedde.

The municipality is located in the southeast of the province of Groningen on the border with Germany.

Bellingwedde

The municipality of Bellingwedde was created on September 1, 1968 through the merger of the previously independent municipalities of Bellingwolde and Wedde.

Vlagtwedde On January 1, 1822, the former municipality and former fortress Bourtange was incorporated.

New municipality The new municipality was created on January 1, 2018 as part of the territorial reforms in the Netherlands, in which the number of municipalities is significantly reduced over a longer period of time. Its name comes from the historical area of the same name .

Jaap Velema ( D66 ) has been the acting mayor of Westerwolde since December 19, 2018 . Leendert Klaassen ( CDA ) had previously been the managing mayor of the municipality since January 1, 2018.

The municipal council consists of 19 members. The election of the first municipal council took place on November 22, 2017. The seats are divided between six parties and groups. Of these, the Gemeentebelangen Westerwolde group received the highest percentage of votes and has six council members. The municipal council has been formed as follows since 2017:

traffic

Local public transport is accomplished with the help of six bus lines that connect the districts with each other and with Emmen, Stadskanaal and Winschoten . There is also a public bus from Sellingen to Stadskanaal.

The most important Rijkswege in the municipality are the N 365 to 368.
