Westerwolde is the southeastern part of the Ommelande and the easternmost part of the province of Groningen in the Netherlands and lies on the border with Germany .

History of the Glory Westerwolde

Until the end of the 16th century it was an independent glory of the Holy Roman Empire . The Westerwolder Weddermarkt was widely known as the cattle market .

In 1619 the city of Groningen bought the glory of Westerwolde.

Peatland colonization

In the 14th century, Westerwolde was nothing more than a collection of widely scattered villages and small settlements in a largely inaccessible moor , the Bourtanger Moor . From 1765 the city of Groningen had the Stadskanaal, named after it, built. The residents of the neighboring feudal settlements drained the moor, excavated it and used the areas obtained for agriculture and animal husbandry.

Nowadays only a little bit of this moor has been preserved in the village of Sellingen. In the course of the work on the museum and fortress town of Bourtange , however, large areas are being watered again.
