Location and economy

Veendam, a former bog colony (see: Fehnsiedlungen ), is located about 20 km southeast of the provincial capital Groningen . The railway line to Zuidbroek , which has only been used for freight traffic since 1953 , has been used again for passenger traffic twice an hour with continuous trains to Groningen since May 1, 2011. A car road (not a motorway) connects the place with Assen and Hoogezand .

The headquarters of the AVEBE group are located in Veendam . This large company processes potatoes into a wide variety of products, including a. Potato starch . There are also many smaller factories and trading companies, mainly transport and logistics companies. Veendam is a regional shopping and supply center.

history

The place where Veendam is now was inhabited as early as the Neolithic . Like all the surrounding towns, Veendam was founded in the 17th century , between 1650 and 1655, as a settlement for peat cutters . In 1791 the corpse of Kibbelgaarn was discovered near Veendam .

The development was built along moor canals ( wijken ), which can still be seen in the present day townscape. In the 19th century Veendam was an important center of inland navigation . The surrounding lands are particularly suitable for growing industrial potatoes . This led to the founding of the potato flour and starch factory AVEBE. Between 1950 and 1980, this industry severely polluted the environment, particularly through water pollution. Then measures were taken to reduce the impact on the environment.

Veendam was the residence of Anthony Winkler Prins , who wrote the first encyclopedia in Dutch from 1866 to 1882 .
