Hoogezand is a place with 21,670 inhabitants in the Dutch province of Groningen .
Hoogezand has belonged to the municipality of Hoogezand-Sappemeer since 1949 , which became part of the municipality of Midden-Groningen in 2018 . The name is derived from a field name, Hooge Sandt . Since 1618 a canal has run through the district, the Winschoterdiep , which connects Winschoten with Groningen . A settlement was built on the high ground, with the year the canal was built, 1618, also being the official founding year of Hoogezand. Initially a purely village settlement, industrialization found its way with the construction of WA Scholten's potato flour factory , which led to a strong population increase. New settlers also found work to build ships along the canal.
