Stadskanaal – Zuidbroek railway line

Route

The Stadskanaal – Zuidbroek railway is a connection between Stadskanaal and Zuidbroek that was opened on August 1, 1910 . It was abandoned several times for passenger transport. Freight traffic was maintained on the entire route until 1990, then to the intermediate station in Veendam . The section to Stadskanaal continued to be used as a museum railway from 1994. In 2011, the Zuidbroek - Veendam section was reopened for local rail passenger transport . The route is not electrified .

The line was created through the Noodoosterlocaalspoorweg-Maatschappij (NOLS), as a connection to the lines already built.

On May 15, 1939, the line was closed to passenger traffic for the first time . The line was reopened by the German occupation . On May 17, 1953, the line was finally closed to passenger traffic. The freight remained significant, especially in the section Veendam-Zuidbroek. The Groningen Railport container terminal is located in Veendam, and Nedmag is a major producer of magnesium compounds.

The Stadskanaal – Veendam section was closed to freight transport on May 27, 1990 and reopened in 1994 as a museum line of the Stichting Stadskanaal Rail (STAR). The Stichting Stadskanaal Rail is now the owner of this section. In 2006 and 2007 the line was completely renewed and renovated.

  • Meeden-Muntendam: no building (the holding building was demolished in 1966)
  • Zuidbroek: 1865, SS, type SS-Hoogezand

Trains

  • Twice an hour there is a stop between Veendam and Groningen
  • STAR runs between July and August mostly on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, and in the off-season on certain weekends and public holidays between Stadskanaal and Veendam.
