Veendam Station is a Dutch station in Veendam on the Stadskanaal – Zuidbroek railway and has been the terminus of the Groningen – Zuidbroek – Veendam railway since the end of 2011 . It is also the end point of the “STAR” museum line from Veendam to Stadskanaal . The station was closed to passenger traffic in 1953 and reopened in 2010.
history
Veendam station opened in 1910. It was on the Stadskanaal – Zuidbroek line, which was built by the Noordoosterlokaalspoorweg (NOLS) and later by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS).
Station building
The station building is in the NOLS station style. After the station was closed in 1953, the line was still used for freight traffic . The building is a Rijksmonument .
reopening
Although Arriva Netherlands wanted to start operating in 2010, Veendam station was only reopened for passenger traffic on May 1, 2011 after 57 years. Four spurt trains were purchased from Stadler Rail to run the line . A new platform was built for Arriva's rail operations.
buses
On September 15, 2011, a bus station was opened at the train station. Bus routes 171, 110, 13, 76, 174, 271, 71 stop at the bus station. The express bus 110 and the night bus (Saturday alone) 401 also stop there.
