Edith Breckwoldt , b. Burmester (* 1937 in Lauenburg ; † August 22, 2013 in Hamburg ) was a German sculptor from Northern Germany. She is known for her large and small-scale sculptures in the Hamburg area, which revolve around the themes of peace, community and symbiosis.

Life

Edith Burmester was one of three daughters of the Lauenburg inland tanker shipowner , called " Onassis der Oberelbe", Christoph Burmester († 1988, see also Hitzler shipyard ). In 1959 she moved to Hamburg and married Frank Breckwoldt, a grandson of the perfume and fine soap manufacturer Georg Dralle , who is now co-owner and managing director of Ryf Coiffeur GmbH . The couple have a daughter together, Birke , named after the birch water Birkin von Dralle. At the end of the eighties, Edith Breckwoldt, the "recognized make-up artist with international professional experience", sold basic make-up courses on VHS video cassettes through the Ryf hairdressing salons . Together with her husband, she founded the Breckwoldt Foundation in 2012, which is intended to promote projects and artists in sculpture and valuable corporate management in the future.

sculpture

In 1990 Breckwoldt found her way to sculpture. She had the technology conveyed to her by Fritz Fleer , a master student of Edwin Scharff . At an early age she distanced herself from her teacher in order to develop her own style of 'felt forms', a personal style that is characterized by the emphasis on an emotional process of creation. She created her sculptures as a reaction to a dominant inner feeling without a sketch, purely intuitively. In this way an oeuvre with abstract and figurative forms was created. A permanent exhibition with her bronze sculptures took place until April 2017 in the private gallery with art garden in the Alte Landstrasse in Hamburg-Poppenbüttel .

Edith Breckwoldt died a few days after her 76th birthday on August 22, 2013 at Hohenlinden Castle in Hamburg-Poppenbüttel. In April 2017, Breckwoldt's entire oeuvre found a new home in Lauenburg (Elbe) . Here it is to be made accessible to the public as the “Lauenburg Art Path”.

Works in the St. Nikolai Memorial, Hamburg

Two of the three bronze sculptures - peace prayer and earth angel - by Edith Breckwoldt in the Hamburg memorial Former main church St. Nikolai are donations by the artist to the support group "Save the Nikolaikirche" eV, whose 2nd chairman is her husband Frank Breckwoldt.

  • Peace prayer is the title of a figure from 2001. It depicts a kneeling, praying woman who is hugged by a child. It is located in the middle of the so-called "Garden of Contemplation ", a demarcated area in the former north aisle, which is planted with rhododendrons and covered with pebbles of different colors. The figure is supposed to create an arc from the terrifying past to a hopeful future.
  • The prayer for peace has moved to the artist's birthplace, Lauenburg an der Elbe , and was ceremoniously unveiled on December 1, 2017 at the Maria Magdalenen Church.
Earth angel "Take my hand and I will lead you back to you" , 2003, memorial St. Nikolai

  • Earth Angel is the title of a central, six meter high bronze sculpture from 2003. The title and subtitle of the sculpture is affixed to the base in eight languages. The artist's message is Take my hand, and I will lead you back to you and should express that all knowledge rests in the person himself: If he finds himself back, he will also find peace; this in turn is a prerequisite for peacefulness between people.
Examination , 2004, St. Nikolai Memorial
  • Examination , a bronze figure created by Edith Breckwoldt in 2004, is placed in the apse of the former south aisle and dedicated to the memorial of the former main camp Sandbostel , which, 60 km west of Hamburg, was one of the largest German prisoner-of-war camps from 1939 to 1945 . More than 50,000 people died there, including around 10,000 prisoners from the Neuengamme concentration camp . The base of the sculpture is made of bricks from the foundations of the barracks, which were collected on the camp grounds by students from Sandbostel. The artist inscribed a bronze plaque with a quote attributed to Dietrich Bonhoeffer :

“No one in the whole world can change the truth. One can only look for it, find it and serve it. The truth is in every place. "
