history

The shipyard was founded in 1885 by Johann Georg Hitzler .

The shipyard was founded because the brothers Paul and Ludwig Burmester operated a shipping line on the Elbe between Lauenburg and Hamburg and were looking for a cheap repair yard. Therefore, the brothers supported the shipyard founder Johann Georg Hitzler in setting up a small repair dock .

The shipyard produced the first ship, the Johanna , in 1886. It was a barge with a load capacity of 400 tons. After building more barges and barges, the first motorboat was completed in 1892. This Anna ferry boat for the Lauenburg ferry leaseholder was equipped with a Gottlieb Daimler engine. 15 years after the shipyard was founded, the first cargo steamer for Matthias Burmester was completed in 1900 . In 1903 a floating dock was built, so the large paddle steamers could be repaired better.

The eldest son Theodor Hitzler, who has been with the company since 1892, took over the Mahnkesche shipyard in Hamburg-Veddel in 1907 . The management of the Lauenburg shipyard was taken over in 1909 by the other sons Franz and Georg Hitzler. At the end of the First World War , the shipyard built the first seaworthy fish steamers.

After difficulties and high losses at J. G. Hitzler Schiffswerft & Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG in 2000, the shipyard facilities and part of the workforce were taken over by the newly founded Hitzler Werft GmbH on February 1, 2001 . This company is held equally by Arminius Werke GmbH in Bodenwerder and Franz C. Hitzler in Lauenburg.

Other Hitzler shipyards

In 1915 Theodor Hitzler built a shipyard in Deggendorf an der Donau, which he sold again in 1918, later: Deggendorfer Werft- und Eisenbau GmbH .

As early as 1921, Theodor Hitzler - with the participation of the Lauenburger Werft - founded another shipyard on the Danube, this time in Regensburg . Walter Hitzler, the youngest of the four sons of JG Hitzler, became the employed managing director and owner from 1930.

There were 3 independent shipyards owned by the sons of Johann Georg Hitzler:

  • The father's shipyard JG Hitzler in Lauenburg
  • Theodor Hitzler shipyard in Hamburg-Veddel
  • Shipyard Th. Hitzler, owner Walter Hitzler in Regensburg
