Westerkwartier has been a municipality in the Dutch province of Groningen since January 1st, 2019 . It emerged from the merger of the communities of Grootegast , Leek , Marum and Zuidhorn and the villages of Ezinge, Feerwerd and Garnwerd from the municipality of Winsum .

geography

The municipality is located in the area of the same name in the north of the Netherlands. Westerkwartier is surrounded by the provinces of Drenthe and Fryslân in the south and west. The Reitdiep river flows to the north , while the Van Starkenborghkanaal , which connects the Prinses Magrietkanaal in Friesland with the Eemskanaal in the municipality of Groningen, runs in the middle of the municipality . The highest point with 18 m NAP is located south of Zevenhuizen, the lowest point with −5 m NAP is between Leek and Zuidhorn.

The municipality includes 41 villages: Aduard, Boerakker, Briltil, De Wilp, Den Ham, Den Horn, Doezum, Enumatil, Ezinge, Faan, Feerwerd, Garnwerd, Grijpskerk, Grootegast, Jonkersvaart, Kommerzijl, Kornhorn, Lauwerzijl, Leek, Lettelbert, Lucaswolde , Lutjegast, Marum, Midwolde, Niebert, Niehove, Niekerk, Niezijl, Noordhorn, Noordwijk, Nuis, Oldehove, Oldekerk, Oostwold, Opende, Pieterzijl, Saaksum, Sebaldeburen, Tolbert, Visvliet, Zevenhuizen and Zuidhorn. A total of 103 farmers and hamlets belong to these 41 villages .

The citizens of the communities of Grootegast, Leek, Marum and Zuidhorn were able to elect the first local council of Westerkwartier on November 21, 2018. In addition to national parties 50PLUS , CDA , ChristenUnie , D66 , GroenLinks , PvdA and VVD , the local parties Partij voor Veiligheid en Zorg and Sterk Westerkwartier were also elected.

The electoral groups CDA, ChristenUnie, PvdA and VZ Westerkwartier have formed a coalition for the legislative period from 2019 to 2022. All coalition parties are each present with an alderman in the College van burgemeester en wethouders . The college was appointed at a council meeting on January 2, 2019.
