Zuidhorn ( ) was a Dutch municipality in the province of Groningen , with 19,046 inhabitants (as of September 30, 2018) on an area of 128.37 km².
Districts
Many small picturesque villages belonged to Zuidhorn. Some of them only consist of a few farms and a church.

Since the 1960s, more and more families from the city of Groningen moved to Zuidhorn. Because Groningen is easy to reach from Zuidhorn for commuters . There are two train stations (Zuidhorn and Grijpskerk) on the Groningen – Leeuwarden route and there are also many bus connections between the villages and Groningen.

On January 1, 2019, Zuidhorn merged with Grootegast , Leek and Marum to form the new Westerkwartier municipality .

Due to the merger on January 1, 2019, the elections for the council of the new Westerkwartier municipality took place on November 21, 2018.

Greetje de Vries-Leggedoor ( CDA ) was acting mayor of the municipality from October 15, 2017 until the municipality was dissolved . To their college , the Assistant Secretary Henk Bakker (included GroenLinks ), Fred Stol (CDA), Bert Nederveen ( ChristenUnie ) and the municipal secretary Harrie Koning.
The Reitdiep
The Reitdiep is a natural border of the municipality. The river used to be an important link between Groningen and the Wadden Sea. When the strait at the mouth of the river was separated from the sea, shipping for goods on the Reitdiep was stopped. Now there is almost only tourist traffic there.

Curiosities
In the 1980s and 1990s, the farmer Albert Harkema built a miniature Groningen terp church north of the village of Aduard on his farm (approx. 12 × 5 m). When it was completed after 13 years of construction, the municipality of Zuidhorn threatened to demolish the building because Harkema did not have a building permit. However, after more and more onlookers and tourists visited the Harkemas and Zuidhorn farms, the municipality subsequently issued a permit as a stable building. Today the private church is open to visitors, farmer Harkema sold the farm and a tea house built for it to a farming family in the late 1990s.
