Leek ( listen ? / I ) was a municipality in the Netherlands in the province of Groningen , with 19,662 inhabitants (as of September 30, 2018) on an area of ​​64.28 km². Audio file / audio sample

The route of the A7 motorway , which leads from Amsterdam via Groningen to Germany , runs through Leek .

Until 1938 there was a tram connection that was used from 1957 to 1985 for freight transport from Drachten to Groningen. At that time the trains ran across the main street Leeks in the middle of the city. In 1987 the route was abandoned.

On January 1st, 2019, Leek merged with Grootegast , Marum and Zuidhorn to form the new municipality of Westerkwartier .

Due to the merger on January 1, 2019, the elections for the council of the new Westerkwartier municipality took place on November 21, 2018.

From December 1, 2005 until the municipality was dissolved, Berend Hoekstra ( VVD ) was the acting mayor of the municipality. His colleagues included the councilors Hans Morssink ( CDA ), Ben Plandsoen ( PvdA ), Karin Dekker ( GroenLinks ) and the municipal secretary Martin Schomper.
