Grootegast ( listen ? / I ) was a municipality in the northeast of the Netherlands , in the province of Groningen . The community had 12,133 inhabitants (as of September 30, 2018) and was 87.74 km². Audio file / audio sample

Grootegast was a rural community. There were a few small villages, including Lutjegast. In Dutch , groote means big and lutje means small. The navigator Abel Tasman was born in Lutjegast in 1603 . There is no longer a house where he was born , but a memorial and a street remember him.

On January 1, 2019, Grootegast merged with Leek , Marum and Zuidhorn to form the new Westerkwartier community.

Due to the merger on January 1, 2019, the elections for the council of the new Westerkwartier municipality took place on November 21, 2018.

Ard van der Tuuk ( PvdA ) was acting mayor of the municipality from October 5, 2016 until the municipality was dissolved . At his college , the Assistant Secretary Sjabbo Smedes (included CDA ), Mark de Haan ( ChristenUnie ), Elly Pastoor-Meuleman (PvdA) and the municipal secretary Eric Paré.
