action

In Philadelphia , USA , in 1943 under the direction of the scientist Dr. James Longstreet tested a new cloak system designed to make the USS Eldridge warship invisible on radar . When the system's generators start up, the ship can actually no longer be located. But then it comes to a catastrophe and the USS Eldridge suddenly disappeared without a trace. Longstreet, who and his team are following the experiment from another ship, orders the generators to be switched off immediately. However, radio contact can no longer be established with the missing ship. There is panic aboard the USS Eldridge as the ship is apparently exposed to a strong energy field , which has devastating consequences for the crew.

Sailors David Herdeg and Jim Parker jump overboard to save themselves. Instead of falling into the water, they fall through a time hole and land in 1984, where Longstreet conducts a similar experiment in which an experimental station has disappeared; the two sailors suddenly appear in their old position. Longstreet is gradually beginning to understand the connections between his present and the previous experiment. The experimental station is located together with the USS Eldridge in the time hole that can be seen as a black hole in the sky and sucks all matter into itself, so that there is a risk of a global catastrophe if it does not close again. After being identified as belonging to the missing ship, David and Jim are hunted by the military police . Gradually they find out that they are no longer in their time, but in a later one, in which people now have a different lifestyle and technical progress is far ahead of their time.

Jim and David meet Allison at a gas station. They take control of the young woman and flee in their car. When there is an accident, Allison and David are unharmed, while Jim has to be hospitalized. David, however, is arrested by the police. Allison understands their situation and falls in love with David. She does not file a complaint and makes sure that David is released again. The two visit Jim, who is getting worse and worse, in the hospital. David explains to the doctor what happened to him and Jim. But he doesn't seem to believe it until Jim has a seizure and disappears before his eyes without a trace. Jim is then back on board the USS Eldridge. The military police show up at the hospital and, with Allison's help, David barely escapes.

David and Allison go to the Parkers' ranch, where Jim lives as an old man in 1984. He rejects David and refuses to speak to him because he no longer wants to be reminded of what happened back then. Then the military police reappear and David and Allison can escape again. While on the run, they happened to find documents from which they learned about Longstreet's experiment. They break into his research facility, where he explains everything to them. Longstreet makes it clear to David that he must return aboard the USS Eldridge to turn off the generators, the only way to prevent a global catastrophe. David is provided with a protective suit and catapulted back into the time hole and then destroys the generators on the USS Eldridge. After a brief exchange with Jim, he jumps overboard again before the time hole closes, leaving him in 1984, where he begins a new life with Allison. When the USS Eldridge surfaced again in 1943, Longstreet and his team were faced with a horror. Numerous crew members are seriously injured or dead. Some have melted into the steel of the ship.

criticism

“This science fiction flick by Stewart Raffill ('Alone on Pirate Island') is far removed from any logic, but knows how to entertain with moments of tension and good images. The successor, on the other hand, was just a hodgepodge of set pieces from this film. "

"Despite the elaborate technology and effects, a rather conservative science fiction film with a few attempted satirical swipes at American politics and society."
