Van Starkenborghkanaal
The Van Starkenborghkanaal connects the Prinses-Margriet Canal ( Friesland ) with the Ems Canal in Groningen . The canal is 27 km long. It has two locks , the Gaarkeuken lock near Grijpskerk and the Oostersluis , which is located within the urban area of Groningen.
history
The Van Starkenborghkanaal was completed in 1938 and started operating in November of the same year. The canal was rebuilt between Zuidhorn and Groningen ( Oostersluis ), the section between Zuidhorn and the Frisian border consists of the widened Hoendiep .
The canal was named after Edzard Tjarda van Starkenborgh (1859-1936). He was Mayor of Groningen and then Queen's Commissioner for the Province of Groningen .
