The Van Starkenborghkanaal connects the Prinses-Margriet Canal ( Friesland ) with the Ems Canal in Groningen . The canal is 27 km long. It has two locks , the Gaarkeuken lock near Grijpskerk and the Oostersluis , which is located within the urban area of ​​Groningen.

history

The Van Starkenborghkanaal was completed in 1938 and started operating in November of the same year. The canal was rebuilt between Zuidhorn and Groningen ( Oostersluis ), the section between Zuidhorn and the Frisian border consists of the widened Hoendiep .

The canal was named after Edzard Tjarda van Starkenborgh (1859-1936). He was Mayor of Groningen and then Queen's Commissioner for the Province of Groningen .
