Mochlos ( Greek Μόχλος ( m. Sg. )) Is a village on the northeast coast of the Greek island of Crete . It belongs to the Sitia Municipality, Lasithi Regional Unit . In front of the place is the island of Agios Nikolaos (Άγιος Νικόλαος), often called Mochlos itself, on which there is an archaeological excavation site. The island is about 180 meters from the mainland. There is another small archaeological site on the western edge of the village.
location
Mochlos is about halfway between the cities of Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. The offshore island protects the village from high waves. The place can only be reached via two access roads from Sfaka or Lastros . According to official statistics from 2011, Mochlos has 121 inhabitants, and in the summer there are not only tourists but also numerous locals from the higher places. Administratively, Mochlos belongs to Tourloti in the municipality of Sitia.
Excavation site
The small island in front of the town was probably connected to the land at the time of settlement, but the connection was destroyed as a result of earthquakes (1700 BC). The underwater connections can still be seen today.
Since around 3000 BC There was a Minoan settlement here. Archaeologists suspect that an important seaport of the Minoans was here. Unique gold jewelry was found in house-shaped graves and can be seen in the museum in Heraklion .
The excavations began in 1908 under Richard Seager . In 1990, American archaeologists resumed work under the auspices of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro . They continue to this day. The island can be reached and entered by boat on request.
