Location of the Ems Canal in the Netherlands

The Emskanal ( Dutch Eemskanaal ) connects the city of Groningen (the Winschoterdiep and the Van Starkenborghkanaal ) with Delfzijl (the Ems ) in the Netherlands . The canal is 26.5 km long and 60 m wide.

The canal was laid out between 1866 and 1876 and widened in 1963.

It is an important shipping connection (navigable for coasters ) and also an important drainage point for the north-east of Drenthe (the Hunze and the Drentse Aa ) and the area around Hoogezand-Sappemeer .

In 1958 a second connection with the Ems was dug near Delfzijl. From then on, the old canal was only used for water drainage and the new one for shipping.

At this time the Oosterhornhaven was also created, where the large industrial area of Delfzijl is now located.

There are still four of the former 16 bridges, while two new ones have been added.
