Pekela ( municipality in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands . The municipality has 12,205 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019) on 50.2 km² .
) is ahistory
The story of Pekela begins at the end of the 15th century when the city of Groningen had a castle built in the Ommelanden on the banks of the river Pekel ( Pekel A , also written Pekel-Aa ) in order to secure its power , the Pekelborg (around 1480, 1478 at the earliest ). In 1599 five Frisian and Dutch families bought fen land along the river Pekel, not far from the castle, and began to create a fen colony they called Pekela . The new settlers and day laborers employed by them deepened the pekel and dug trenches to drain the moor. They cut peat , which was sold as fuel to Emden and as far as Bremen and Hamburg. Up to 500 workers were employed in the summer. By cutting peat they also gained pastureland for cattle breeding; Some arable farming, initially only on small fields with little yield, was added. Pekela was the first fen colony in the northeast of the Netherlands. After the settlement had consolidated, it was expanded to the southwest along the Pekel, especially in the second half of the 17th century.
At the beginning of the 18th century, the number of settlers had grown so that two churches were built in 1704 and 1706: one reformed and one Lutheran . The two ends of the elongated fen colony were Beneden Pekela (= Lower Pekela, today Oude Pekela = Old Pekela) in the northeast and Boven Pekela (= Upper Pekela, today Nieuwe Pekela = New Pekela) in the southwest.
During the short-lived reign of Louis Bonaparte as King of Holland , the parish was also administratively divided into Oude Pekela and Nieuwe Pekela. In 1990 the two parts were reunited to form the community of Pekela.
Up until the 20th century, Pekela was known for making straw cardboard. Because the working conditions were bad, there was a lot of sympathy for communism . In addition, the Communist Party of the Netherlands ( CPN ) in the east of the province of Groningen had a large following.
