history

origin of the name

The origin of the name Dersum (old: Dersinun ) is not known. But it is close to a Chaukisch / Frisian origin. The names of Frisian foundations often end with "- um ". The endings ina , ini , ine , inun , enan , enun , um , un , ene , en appear in numerous place names instead of a terminated basic word, without it being possible to decide whether they go back to the same or several original, old words. There is a general basic word meaning "settlement". The um, which is common in Emsland, is a younger form that has partly replaced the older one, for example in Baccum instead of Baccamun , Walchum for Walkiun .

Incorporations

On January 1, 1973, the neighboring community Neudersum was incorporated.
