history

Hase below the pedestrian and cyclist bridge to the town center; on its bank the statue of St. Nepomuk

In 1965, the former "Samtgemeinde Herzlake und Umgebung", today the municipality Herzlake, emerged from the communities Herzlake, Bookhof, Felsen, Neuenlande and Westrum. The administrative center has been here since 1974, when the present-day Herzlake municipality was established. Herzlake is the central school location with two primary schools and one high school. 4,229 (2013) inhabitants live in an area of 49.77 km².

Already in Germanic times there was a settlement at the place where Herzlake is today. Herzlake was first mentioned in a document around 990. In the course of history, the place, located between two Geestrücken on the river Hase, developed into an important bridge through which the old, important trade route Flanders-Hamburg-Denmark ( Flemish Road ) led, today's E 233 ( B 213 ).

In the Middle Ages, Herzlake and its parish church were the administrative center of the parish. To this parish belonged the place and the farmers Herzlake as well as the farmers Bakerde, Bookhof / Jödenstraße, Felsen, Neuenlande, Groß Dohren, Klein Dohren, Westrum and part of Lewinghausen and Düenkamp. The last two places mentioned had a medieval structure until the 19th century, with some farms belonging to the parish of Löningen and others (most) to Herzlake. After the Congress of Vienna, the Duchy of Oldenburg claimed full administration of both peasant communities. By a state treaty between the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg and the Kingdom of Hanover in 1863, the places were completely assigned to Oldenburg. In terms of the church, the last farm (Korte) was only changed to Löningen in the 20th century.

With the year 1820 Herzlake lost the local authority for the farmers of his parish. They became independent municipal bodies. In church terms, however, they still belonged to Herzlake. Already occasionally in the 18th, but increasingly in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, the communities Groß Dohren, Klein Dohren and Westrum tried to achieve church independence. Chapels were built in Westrum and Klein Dohren (for all of Dohren). While the efforts for Westrum ultimately remained unsuccessful, Dohren became an independent parish for the villages of Klein and Groß Dohren in 1910.

Hahnenmoorkanal near Aselage, east of the Herzlake – Berge road

In 1920 the Aselage estate, which previously belonged to the Bersenbrück district, was incorporated into the Meppen district. It became part of the village of Westrum and has belonged to Herzlake church since that time. It should be noted here that many residents of Aselage felt drawn to the church of Herzlake as early as the 19th century. So let z. B. many baptize their children in Herzlake and not in mountains, which Aselage was still a part of back then.

In 1894 the Meppen-Haselünner Railway (EHE) was built to Haselünne, the connection to Herzlake was completed in 1902, the connection to the Grand Ducal Oldenburg Railway was made in 1907. This opened a “gateway to the world” for the Herzlake area. Today this route is no longer used for scheduled passenger transport, but for freight traffic and, with the museum railway, for tourism. Today the "Kulturbahnhof" is located in the restored station building.

On the right bank of the Hase, east of Herzlake, on a slope slightly inclined to the south, there is a burial ground, presumably from the Bronze and / or Pre-Roman Iron Age, the "Kanonenberge". 18 burial mounds, in which a village community of several peasant families probably buried their dead, are still there.

Another attraction is the approx. 700 year old St. Nicholas Church in the center of the village. Here is a monumental font from the 12th century, made from Bentheim sandstone . Also worth seeing is the fountain on the "Neuer Markt", which was unveiled on March 1, 1990 as part of the 1000th anniversary of Herzlakes. The six gargoyles are reminiscent of the six villages that have come together to form the municipality of Herzlake.

The old school of the districts Bookhof, Felsen and Neuenlande is located in Bookhof. They were first mentioned in 1784 . The oldest building on this site is the school with a bell tower from 1863. In 1963, exactly 100 years later, today's four-class primary school was built on the same site.

Westrum, formerly known as Westreim, is first mentioned around 947 .

Aselage windmill

In Aselage itself there is the restored Erdholländer windmill, directly at the hotel "Aselager Mühle".

The Aseburg, which is still recognizable today as a rampart, or its farmyard was first mentioned in 1074 . The fortifications, consisting of the main and outer bailey, surrounded by ditches and earth walls and built on a peninsula on the Hase, were a mansion from the 9th / 10th. Century.

At the border between the former Kingdom of Hanover and Oldenburg (now the municipality boundary Düenkamp-Westrum to Holter Mühle) there are still a number of boundary stones (conical approx. 2.00 m in diameter and numbered).

The Aselager mill: In 1809 a grain windmill was built in Aselage at a cost of 2500 Reichstalers . After a short time, the landlord Johann Rudolf Lehmkuhl had great difficulty making the payments to the Landdrosten, since in 1815 three new windmills (Felsen, Huckelrieden and Evenkamp) were built an hour away . Around 1860 the Aselager mill was demolished and sold to Andorf . At the current location, the mill builder Dierkes from Hüven built an Erddolländer windmill with codend in 1860 . These mills were used by the landlord in Aselage himself until the middle of the 19th century and were taken care of by a miller. From 1931, the tenant Bernhard Sanders used the "Püttwagen" to collect the grist from customers and a. from the settlement of Hahnenmoor , mainly for the purpose of black bread bakery. Bread rye was exchanged one for one for black bread, 20-25 pounds. In November 1941, a hurricane damaged the windmill so badly that it had to be shut down. The wings were sold to Huckelrieden and built into the Schutenmühle there ; the mill building fell into ruin. The black bread bakery was continued by hand. In 1967 the current hotel was built and the windmill restored.

Incorporations

In 1964, the neighboring community of Bakerde was incorporated. On March 1, 1974, the municipalities of Bookhof, Felsen, Neuenlande and Westrum were added as part of the Lower Saxony municipal reform.

coat of arms

Blazon : "Split of red and gold in a wavy cut, inside three balls in confused colors at the front, a stag's pole at the back , both in pole position."

The location on the river illustrates the undulating division. The stag rod refers to the first part of the place name, which is passed down as herslaghe, herslike, hareslecge, Hartlage, Herleke or Hesleke and is interpreted as "Hirschort" or "Hirschdorf". The three spheres are the traditional attribute of St. Nicholas, the patron of long-distance merchants and boatmen, to whom the Herzlake Church, founded after 1074 as a chapel or own church of the Meierhof Herßum, is consecrated. The colors red and gold are those of the former duchy of Münster, to whose Niederstift Herzlake belonged from the high Middle Ages to the end of the old empire in 1803.

Culture and sights

Sports

VfL Herzlake

In 1993 VfL Herzlake reached the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga, but failed because of Eintracht Trier, Prussia Münster and the winner of the round, Rot-Weiss Essen . After that, the Herzlaker played in the regional league for a few years, but as a result of the Bosman ruling - the transfer fees were halved and stretched to three years - and even more because of the financial collapse of the furniture empire of the club sponsor Karl-Heinz Klose, things went downhill. In the 1998/99 season the team landed in 17th place and was relegated. In addition, the club could not raise the budget for the following season and had to file for bankruptcy. In the 2007/2008 season and the 2008/09 season, VfL Herzlake played in the 1st district class and the 2nd team in the 3rd district class.

In the 2008/09 season, VfL Herzlake was promoted to the 1st district league sovereignly - without defeat. In the following season 2009/2010 the VfL Herzlake rose to the district league.

Numerous regional and Bundesliga clubs, but also foreign teams, use the excellent conditions in Herzlake to prepare for the season. The professionals from Werder Bremen once renamed the place in the winter training camp under Felix Magath in "pain lake".

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Herzlake is connected to the rail network by a branch line to the Meppen-Haselünner Railway , on which goods and museum traffic takes place. There is also a stop on the B 213 for through traffic towards Essen (Oldb) . Until the construction of the bypass road and the associated relocation of the railway systems, the railway line ran through the town.

Foreign contacts

Herzlake maintains close contacts with Ukraine through the oligarch Oleksandr Onyshchenko . The Ukrainian judiciary has accused the Deputy of the Supreme Rada of Ukraine of illegal enrichment. Onyschtschenko escaped the police investigation in his home country by fleeing to Germany, not by chance to Herzlake, where he owns an estate with facilities for horse breeding and horse training.
