The Hahnenmoor is a nature reserve that extends south of Herzlake , east of Dohren (both districts of Emsland ) and north of Grafeld and from there merges into the district of Osnabrück . The area is around 620 hectares and was placed under nature protection in 1977 as part of the Lower Saxony moor protection program under the registration number NSG WE 054. The NSG Hahnenmoor is part of an FFH area, which also includes the Hahlener Moor and the Suddenmoor . Hahnenmoor is also the name of the westernmost part of the municipality of Menslage .

history

After the end of the last Ice Age, the Hahnenmoor formed an obstacle to the outflow of the Hase from the Quakenbrücker Basin (the term "Hahnenmoor" in this context means the entire area of moorland southwest of the Hase Inland Delta that was contiguous at the time). Only through a bottleneck between the moor and the Cloppenburger Geest , where the Große Hase still flows today, could the water masses flowing from the Dammer Mountains and the Osnabrücker Land be diverted (if at all) , which led to constant flooding in the Quakenbrücker Basin. With the construction of the curve-poor Hahnenmoorkanals in the north of the Hahlener Moors and the Hahnenmoors, the Kleine Hase was extended as the second Hasearm in the Hase Inland Delta . This greatly accelerated the drainage of the water masses. This circumstance also facilitated the drainage of the moors south of the Hase.

For centuries, the Hahnenmoor served the residents of the surrounding communities to extract peat as heating material. Buckwheat was harvested on first drained and then flamed moorland and sheep kept the regrowing shrubs and the heather short. At the same time the animals served humans as suppliers of wool, fur and meat. Many peatland dwellers also kept bee colonies to produce honey.

For the purpose of rewetting scale peat dams.

With industrialization from 1958 to 1988, the peat in the Hahnenmoor was mined industrially with peat cutting machines and on a large scale. Soon it was considered to be exploited and one of the most pierced moors in Lower Saxony .

The moor today

In the meantime, large areas of the Hahnenmoor have been rewetted. Dying birch trees and remains of tree trunks protrude from the water and give the landscape something surreal. The viewer is offered some views that are reminiscent of pictures by the painter Salvador Dali . Despite the success of the rewetting , the Hahnenmoor is not yet a real high moor again . The earlier interventions in nature were too great. In particular, industrial peat mining has left its mark, the decline of which will take some time to complete. Every year in early autumn, migratory birds can be observed in the Hahnenmoor. a. Whooper swans , gray geese and also cranes . It has been observed that cranes have chosen the cockseat as a breeding area. Whooper swans that migrate from the Finnish taiga to northern Germany often overwinter in the Hahnenmoor. Where the water level is insufficient to prevent the growth of trees, the moor is kept free of trees by a flock of sheep. The Hahnenmoor is particularly attractive when the cotton grass is in bloom. Scabbard cottongrass and narrow-leaved cottongrass , as they are characteristic of the Hahnenmoor, make a decisive contribution to the formation of peat.
