The Provinzialmoor is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Twist in the district of Emsland .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG WE 280 is around 533  hectares in size. It has been under protection since December 21, 2013. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Emsland.

The nature reserve is located northeast of Twist and west of the Rühlerfeld district in the Bourtanger Moor-Bargerveen International Nature Park . It places part of a raised moorland under protection. The raised bog area has been partially peeled off and is to be renatured through rewetting measures . In the south of the nature reserve there is an area for which a permit for peat extraction was in place until the end of 2018 . This area should also be rewetted. Facilities for the extraction of natural gas and oil are located in several places within the nature reserve.

The area represents a coherent raised bog area with a mosaic of near-natural raised bogs, raised bog regeneration stages , bog heaths , swamp forests and rewetted black peat areas. The largest part is characterized by open, former peat excavation areas. These are criss-crossed by peat dams and drainage ditches . Bog forest areas can also be found in the south of the protected area.

The protection serves to preserve and restore typical raised bog habitats as a habitat for rare animal and plant species and their communities. Measures for the cultivation of peat moss ( paludiculture ) and the inoculation and harvesting of the rewetted areas with native peat moss species can also be permitted.

The moor area is drained via various ditches, particularly towards the Ems , but also towards the south-north canal . In the north-west and west as well as in the east, agricultural areas border the nature reserve , in the north also fallow land and in the south further peat extraction areas. To the west, the approximately one kilometer long “Create moor land” adventure trail borders the rewetting areas in the nature reserve.
