description

Grassland
Bog forest

The nature reserve is located east of Cloppenburg in something between Werlte, Vrees and Lindern (Oldenburg) in the lowlands of Marka and Mittelradde , some of which have their source streams in the nature reserve. It protects the remainder of an upland moor, which used to be over 300 hectares with peat thicknesses of up to five meters. The peat bog has been greatly changed by the use of manual peat digging and the cultivation of buckwheat or grazing with sheep, as well as the increased drainage from the middle of the 20th century due to the expansion of the upper reaches of Mittelradde and Marka . The nature reserve is today characterized by a mosaic of grasslands , moor forests and an area of around 30 hectares with open moor and moor heather areas . The grassland is partly used extensively. The bog forests are rich in peat moss . They are dominated by downy birch , which are joined by trees typical of the location. The forests have a high old and dead wood share and structurally rich forest edges . Parts of the reserve are since autumn 1998 Wiedervernässungs measures rehabilitated . Former peat cuttings have often been full of water. They are slowly silting up. Schnabelried societies, cotton-grass hedgehog banks and wet heaths with bell heather and peat moss settle on the moorland . In order to keep the bog areas open, parts of the protected area are grazed with sheep.

The area is part of the bird sanctuary "Niederungen der Süd- and Mittelradde and the Marka" habitat u. a. of harrier , lapwing , black-tailed godwit , Big curlew , snipe , teal , short-eared owl and Stonechat . The former peat cuttings are home to various amphibians and dragonflies . The area is also the habitat of various reptiles .

In the northeast, in the Vreeser Wiesen at the edge of the reserve, there is a nature trail and a lookout tower from which parts of the nature reserve can be viewed.

The nature reserve is surrounded by agricultural land . In the west it is bounded by the Mittelradde, in the south by the Marka and a drainage ditch.

Watershed

The bog of the Bockholter Dose acts as a watershed . The Mittelradde, which runs in the west of the area, flows in a south-westerly direction to the Ems tributary Hase , while the Marka, which runs in the south-east of the area, runs in north-eastern and later northern directions and at the confluence with the Ohe forms the Sagter Ems, which also belongs to the Ems catchment area .
