geography

course

The Marka rises in the border area of the districts of Emsland and Cloppenburg. Its origin lies on the Hase-Leda watershed between the core town of Lindern in the southeast and the Lindern district of Neuenkämpen in the east-southeast (district of Cloppenburg), the Werlter district of Bockholte in the west-northwest and the core town of Vrees in the north-northeast (district of Emsland). It is located on the southeastern edge of the largely as a nature reserve Bockholter box designated Dosenmoor  - between the elevations Holt height ( 44  m ) in the south-southeast and Varel ( 39  m ) to the north.

The Marka initially flows in a northeastern direction. It passes Vrees in the west and Peheim in the east, both of which are a bit away from the river, and to the west at the Molbergener Hofgruppe Bischofsbrück and at the Friesoyth district of Neumarkhausen . From then on it turns north and runs past eastern Markhausen , western Neuvrees in the east and eastern Ellerbrock . After passing the eastern Barkentange and western Heetberg, it bends west and makes a left curve around Neuscharrel, which is far from the river .

Finally, the Marka joins a few meters south of the coastal canal running on the border from Friesoythe to Saterland , between Neuscharrel in the south-southeast and Sedelsberg in the north, with the Ohe zur Sagter Ems , the left source river of the Leda .

Hase Leda watershed

The source area of the Marka lies on the Hase - Leda - watershed : From the source of the Marka to the upper course of the Mittelradde , which rises to the north-northwest, there is an artificially created canal connection that drains the Dosenmoor , which emerges from the Marka source canal. Several small trenches flow towards this canal in the headwaters and the upper reaches of the Marka near the source, including the Vreeser Graben coming from Vrees . While the Mittelradde, which rises north above the Dosenmoor, flows towards the Hase in a predominantly south-westerly direction, the water of the Marka mostly flows northwards towards the Sagter Ems and then the Leda; Hase and Leda are direct tributaries of the Ems .

Protected areas and nature

In the source area of the Marka lies the nature reserve " Bockholter Dose " ( CDDA no. 81428; designated 1983; 1.23  km² in size) with the Dosenmoor . The headwaters, the upper and middle reaches of the river are located in the fauna-flora-habitat area "Markatal with Bockholter Dose" (FFH No. 3012-301; 2.68 km²), which is covered by the nature reserves " Upper course of the Marka / Mittelradde " Markatal bei Bischofsbrück "," Markatal "and" Marka between Markhausen and Delschloot "is protected by nature conservation law. Parts of the bird sanctuaryNiederungen der Süd- and Mittelradde and the Marka ” (VSG no. 3211-431; 43.77 km²) lie along the upper reaches of the river near the source . The river valley there is a grassland area on a fen with numerous birds that have become rare in many places, such as curlew , lapwing and black godwit .

Coin find

In 1890, an eleven-year-old shepherd found coins from the 16th century on the east bank of the Marka (200 paces south of the Chaussee between Peheim and Vrees).
