Sater Ems (1931)

The Sagter Ems (SEm) or Sater Ems (Sater Frisian: Seelter Äi ) is a river in Lower Saxony in the district of Cloppenburg .

course

The Sagter Ems is created by the confluence of the Marka and Ohe in Neuscharrel . The point of the confluence is just before the southern bank of the coastal channel , which the Sagter Ems crosses.

The Sagter Ems then crosses the Saterland from south to north and flows through the villages of Sedelsberg , Scharrel , Ramsloh , Strücklingen and Bokelesch . At the peasantry Roggenberg opens Elisabethfehn into the Sagter Ems. From here until it meets the Dreyschloot on the border with East Frisia , the Sagter Ems is a federal waterway for 0.56 km , for which the Emden Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible. The Dreyschloot, which was artificially built from 1848 to 1852, is a connection to the Barßeler Tief and the Jümme . In East Friesland the Sagter is called Ems Leda .

The Leda, together with the Jümme, forms the scenic Leda-Jümme area. The Jümme flows into the Leda at Wiltshausen and a little later the Leda flows into the Ems at Leer (East Frisia) .

Due to the indirect connection via Leda and Ems to the North Sea , there are still considerable tidal differences in the Sagter Ems .

Historical meaning

The history of the Sa (g) terland is closely connected to the Sagter Ems. Until the 19th century, the Saterland surrounded by moors could only be reached by boat across the Sagter Ems. It was therefore the only way to transport goods and people between the Saterland and the surrounding area. Therefore there was brisk shipping traffic on the river at that time and some shipyards were operated in places like Strücklingen. The Sagter Ems was also a trade route between the North Sea coast and the Westphalian hinterland in the Middle Ages, so in 1457 Groningen secured unhindered trade to Westphalia in the Sagelderland to Friesoythe in a contract with the chiefs of Greetsiel and Esens .

Todays use

Said Ems at Ramsloh

The Sagter Ems is now a popular river with water sports enthusiasts and anglers. From Ramsloh, the Sagter Ems can be used for pleasure craft downstream. The width on this route is between 16 and 20 meters. In Strücklingen and Bokelesch there are water sports clubs that operate their own boat harbors. There is also a paddle and pedal station in Strücklingen , from which canoe and kayak tours on the rivers of southern East Frisia can be undertaken. The station is located directly on the German Fen Route , so that tourists can switch directly from bicycles to boats. A canoe trip from Strücklingen upstream to the coastal canal is also possible.

Sport fishing is also actively pursued on the Sagter Ems. In addition to the typical local fish such as eels , bream , perch , tench and white fish, there have been salmon and trout again in the Sagter Ems for several years , which have been released by the local fishing clubs.
