The Fehnroute is a long-distance cycle route laid out as a circular route , which leads 173 kilometers in the northwestern part of Lower Saxony through East Frisia , the Emsland , the Ammerland and the district of Cloppenburg . It leads through the places that were opened up by peatland colonization . The fen route is also signposted as a holiday route and is accessible by motor vehicle. It is named after the fen settlements that are frequent in this area .
Characteristic for the route are the lack of significant gradients in the North German Plain as well as the multitude of artificially created bog canals with locks and bascule bridges and a large number of windmills . The houses on the side of the road are mostly made of red brick .
The German Fen Route was officially opened on May 2, 1992.
