Jheringsfehn (often incorrectly spelled Iheringsfehn ) is a fen settlement in the municipality of Moormerland in the district of Leer in East Friesland . On December 31, 2016, the place had 2,440 inhabitants who lived on an area of ​​10.55 km².

geography

Jheringsfehn is a row village that stretches along the Jheringsfehn Canal and its tributaries running from northwest to southeast (Hookswieke, Georgswieke, Rudolfswieke, Alte Beekswieke and Neue Beekswieke) to heights between 2.4 and 3.5 meters. The place is about two kilometers east of Warsingsfehn and about four kilometers west-northwest of Hesel on an area of ​​10.33 square kilometers.

history

The first settler was Paul Harsebroek, a dike commissioner from Emden . In 1641 he acquired a moorland plot of around 25 hectares, the so-called Bullenmeede , for 100 Reichstaler . The area was henceforth called de Hook (the corner) because it is in a corner between Boekzetelerfehn and Neuefehn . On October 16, 1660, Harsebroek concluded a long lease agreement with the state government for a further 100  Diemate mud . However, the income from the peat mining remained low, so that Harsebroek got into ever greater financial difficulties, could no longer pay the long lease and was finally bankrupt in 1741. In the subsequent bankruptcy proceedings, Rebecca Ritzius Dam , b. Warsing, the lands of the Harsebroek heirs. Ritzius transferred the property to her son-in-law, the government and chamber councilor Sebastian Eberhard Jhering, in 1742 . Jhering knew the area he had surveyed in 1739. He enlarged the property by another 100 hectares, which had not yet been tackled when he died in 1759. The place name Jheringsfehn appears for the first time in 1772 when Rudolf Philipp Jhering took a further 300 diamonds on a long lease.

Until the incorporation on January 1, 1973, the place belonged to the district of Aurich (East Friesland) .

Population development

The population rose sharply after the Second World War due to the inclusion of displaced persons from the former eastern regions . In 1946 they made up 224 of a total of 1966 inhabitants, which corresponds to a share of 11.4 percent. This rate remained stable in the years that followed.

Culture and sights

Jheringsfehn is a typical Fehnort, the appearance of which is characterized by the classic canals. The local sports club and the Lutheran parish , which also includes the neighboring village of Boekzetelerfehn, are important for village life . The Johannes Church was consecrated in 1864 and stands in the middle of the border between the two villages. Another attraction is the historic cemetery on the Hookswieke with its old gravestones.
