The village of Rorichum is one of the old terp settlements on the right bank of the Ems . It belongs to the municipality of Moormerland and is located about 10 km east of the seaport of the city of Emden in East Friesland , near Oldersum . At the end of 2016 Rorichum had 444 inhabitants who lived in an area of 8.72 km².

Origin and meaning of the place name

In old documents the place is also called Rorechum , Rorichsheem , Rarichum and Rarchum . The place name is probably derived from the personal name Roderich and means svw. "Roderiks Heem", ie "Roderichs house" or "home of Roderik". The place name appears in the form Rarughem already in freight and lifting registers of Werden Abbey around the year 1000th The most important missionary in Friesland, Liudger , transferred many lands to the monastery he had founded.

history

In addition to the Warftdorf, there are five other "old" living spaces: the Tammegast and Venneplatz farms, the rural settlements of Woltersterborg and Middelsterborg and the Buschplatz, a former outbuilding of the Langen monastery. Since the municipal reform , which came into force on January 1, 1973, Rorichum has belonged to the municipality of Moormerland in the district of Leer , Lower Saxony . When it was incorporated, Rorichum brought 351 residents into the new community. The rural-village character of Rorichum was largely retained during the structural change after the Second World War. For several years now, Rorichum has been the starting point for boat and bicycle excursions with the establishment of a “paddle and pedal station”.

Religions

The brick church with the free-standing bell tower , the former rectory and the former school building form a valuable architectural ensemble on the highest point of the terp. The church in Rorichum is a rectangular one-room church without an apse . It dates from the beginning of the 14th century. The free-standing bell tower was built decades in front of the church. In the church of Rorichum, the apse replaced the space behind the organ gallery, in which three tombstones from the 17th and 18th centuries are kept. Shortly after the Oldersum Religious Discussion in 1526, the congregation changed from the Catholic to the Reformed faith . Rorichum has had no pastors since 1920 and is looked after by the Oldersum parish.
