history

Evangelical Reformed Church

In 1401, Tergast was first named as a "guest" in a deed of donation in favor of the Langen Monastery . The term "guest (s)" (or Geest) describes the high-lying farmland. The preposition "tor" and the article "der" are merged to "Ter-". Tergast means “on the back of the Geest” or “sand ridge”.

After the migration of the peoples, the settlement area of the lower Ems belonged to the Emsigerland . In 1447 Hoytet Tammana was mentioned as the chief of Tergast. A few years later, the Tergast parish was part of the glory of Oldersum .

Other residential areas and farms around Tergast are: Tergaster Hammrich, Hohewarf, Rothehahn, Imkhörn, Sünnenblink, the Tergaster Grashaus and the Sieve, a former Vorwerk of the Johanniterkommende Hasselt .

The parish of Tergast - today Protestant Reformed - belonged to the Leer provost in the diocese of Münster in the Middle Ages . Presumably in the first half of the 13th century, the Tergaster church was built on the highest point of the village sand ridge. A school and a schoolmaster were named in Tergast as early as 1560. There has been a waterworks in Tergast since 1895, and gravel has been extracted in Tergast since around the second half of the 19th century.
