Joseph Keter

Joseph Keter (born June 13, 1969 in Lessos , Kenya ) is a former Kenyan track and field athlete who won gold in the 3000-meter obstacle course at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta .

Keter ran a time at an international level for the first time in 1992 with 8: 21.74 minutes. In 1993 and 1994 he won the Kenyan national championships. His first major international success was winning the 1993 African Championships in Durban . In 1995, Keter ran under 8:10 minutes for the first time in 8: 09.59 minutes.

At the Olympic Games in Atlanta, he won both his preliminary and his semi-finals safely. In the final, the two Kenyans Moses Kiptanui and Joseph Keter as well as the Italian Alessandro Lambruschini managed to break away from the field and fought for the medals among themselves. Keter won with a personal best of 8: 07.12 minutes ahead of Kiptanui, who had won the world title in 1991, 1993 and 1995. A week after the Olympic Games, Keter ran the fastest time of his career at the sports festival in Monaco in 8: 05.99 minutes. In 1997 Keter won the IAAF Grand Prix over 3000 meters obstacle. In 1998 he ran a world-class time for the last time in 8: 08.91 min.

Keter was an officer in the Kenyan Air Force during his athletic career. With a height of 1.78 m, his competition weight was 64 kg.
