One month before the start of the 1928 Olympic Games , Loukola set an unofficial world record in the 3000 meter obstacle course ; his time was 9: 25.2 min.
At the games in Amsterdam , Loukola first came seventh in the 10,000-meter run and then easily won his lead in the 3000-meter obstacle course. Loukola was the favorite in the final, as his compatriots Paavo Nurmi and Ville Ritola were still weakened from the 5000 meter run the day before. Ritola soon gave up and Nurmi fell back decisively after 2000 meters. Finally Loukola won by over ten seconds ahead of Nurmi and with a world record of 9: 21.8 minutes.
