Anders Gärderud (born August 28, 1946 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish athlete and Olympic champion.
biography
Gärderud started out as an orienteer and continued throughout his career as a track and field athlete (which he came to because he was banned from orienteering due to jaundice). He competed in his first major competition at the 1968 Olympic Games . Both over 800 meters and over 1500 meters he was eliminated in the heats. Since he was only moderately successful in other races over these distances, he concentrated on the 3000 meter obstacle course , where he soon rose to the top of the world.
Before the 1972 Olympic Games , Gärderud was the favorite for victory in the obstacle course. But he suffered from a severe cold and dropped out in advance. Even over 5000 meters, he could not qualify for the final. But just one week later, on September 14, 1972, he ran a time of 8: 20.8 minutes in the obstacle course in Helsinki , setting a world record .
At the European Athletics Championships in 1974 Gärderud was just beaten by Bronisław Malinowski and won the silver medal. In 1975 he improved the world record twice: on June 25, he needed 8: 10.4 minutes in Oslo . He undercut this time on July 1st in Stockholm by six tenths of a second.
The high point of his career was the 1976 Olympic Games . After an exciting duel with Malinowski, he won the gold medal and improved his own world record to 8: 08.02 min. With a personal best of 3: 36.73 min over 1500 m, he was the fastest participant in the finals. For this achievement he was honored with the renowned Svenska Dagbladet gold medal. In 1977 he became Swedish team champion in orienteering. He practiced pure long-distance training aimed at Gösta Olander and Arthur Lydiard .
