Volmari Fritijof "Vomma" Iso-Hollo (born January 5, 1907 in Ylöjärvi , † June 23, 1969 in Heinola ) was a Finnish athlete and two-time Olympic champion in the 3000-meter obstacle course .

biography

Iso-Hollo was one of the last in a line of Finnish long-distance runners nicknamed the "Flying Finns" because of their superiority between the two world wars. He spent his youth in Kerava , where Iso-Hollo tried cross-country skiing , gymnastics and boxing . When he joined the army, he started training in athletics . He competed in races at all medium and long distances, from 400 meters to marathons .

At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , Iso-Hollo won his first gold medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. A possible world record was prevented because the officials were wrong about the number of laps they had run. The official lap counter was looking in the wrong direction because it would rather follow the decathlon pole vault competition . When Iso-Hollo reached the last round, the functionary forgot to ring the bell. The entire field continued for one lap until the runners were finally stopped after 3460 meters. If everything had gone right, Iso-Hollo would have broken the world record. A few days later, he won the silver medal in the 10,000 meter run .

In 1933 Iso-Hollo broke the world record in the 3000 meter obstacle course and ran a time of 9: 09.4 minutes. At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , he was the top favorite. Iso-Hollo won the 3000 meter obstacle race with a new world record (9: 03.8 min); the first three had all beaten the old world record time. Iso-Hollo also competed over 10,000 meters and won a bronze medal.

Iso-Hollo suffered from rheumatism before the Berlin Games , but continued his career until 1945. He died at the age of 62. In his honor, a statue is placed in the square in front of the Kerava train station, right next to a business center named after him, and annual athletics competitions are held in Kerava in his name.
