Ezekiel Kemboi ( Ezekiel Kemboi Cheboi ; born May 25, 1982 in Matira near Kapsowar , Marakwet ) is a Kenyan obstacle runner . He is a two-time Olympic champion and four-time world champion in his discipline.

biography

Kemboi only got into athletics after finishing school. In 2001 he became the African junior champion even though he fell during the race. In 2002 he finished second at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester . At the African Championships in the same year he was initially fourth, but later received the bronze medal after the Moroccan Brahim Boulami was banned for a doping offense .

At the 2003 World Athletics Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis, Kemboi fought a thrilling duel with his former compatriot Saif Saaeed Shaheen . Shortly before the finish, Shaheen, now starting for Qatar, pulled away and won by less than a second.

The Kenyan Olympic Committee refused to lift the three-year blocking period after Shaheen's nationality change, so that Shaheen was not allowed to participate in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Kemboi was therefore traded as the main favorite for victory. He fulfilled the high expectations and won ahead of his compatriots Brimin Kiprop Kipruto and Paul Kipsiele Koech .

A year later, at the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , he was beaten again by Shaheen and won the silver medal. He also won silver at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, this time behind Brimin Kiprop Kipruto. After finishing seventh at the 2008 Olympic Games , he won his second major title in 2009, becoming world champion in Berlin . In 2011 Kemboi defended this title at the World Championships in Daegu and won the gold medal with a time of 8: 14.85 minutes ahead of his compatriot Brimin Kipruto .

He also won gold at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Kemboi won in 8: 18.56 minutes ahead of Frenchman Mahiedine Mekhissi . In 2013 in Moscow he again won the world title in the 3000 m obstacle course. He won the bronze medal at the 2014 African Championships in Marrakech . In 2015 he became world champion for the fourth time in Beijing .

At the Olympic Games in 2016 he was initially third. After a protest by the French Athletics Federation, however, he was disqualified because he had left the track towards the end of the race.

With two Olympic gold medals, four World Championship titles and another three World Championship silver medals, he is one of the most successful runners of modern times.

Ezekiel Kemboi is 1.65 m tall and has a competition weight of 55 kg.
