The 9th World Athletics Championships (officially: 9th IAAF World Championships in Athletics Paris 2003 ) took place from 23 to 31 August 2003 in the French city of Saint-Denis . With the exception of two finals, the competitions were held in the largest and most modern stadium in France, the Stade de France , where the 1998 World Cup final took place five years earlier .

overview

The only competitions outside of this stadium in the city of Paris itself were the two marathons on the final weekend of the championships. A circuit was completed several times in the city center along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées before the athletes then ran to the finish line in the Stade de France.

A total of 1679 athletes from 197 countries took part in the ninth world championship. For many of those involved, the World Championships in Paris also represented a location for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens .

doping

At these world championships, too, there were again numerous withdrawals of the results that had been achieved initially because it was subsequently found that the athletes concerned had violated the doping rules. Nine athletes were affected - four more than at the last world championships - in a total of nine disciplines. In 2003 the majority (six) of the athletes caught came from the USA , one athlete was Ukrainian , one athlete was British and another was French .

In the years after the World Championships, it became increasingly clear which doping swamp had reached athletics and how far the machinations went.
