Joey Woody (born May 22, 1973 in Iowa City ) is an American athlete.

The 400-meter hurdle runner Woody could not qualify for major international competitions until 1997, but that year he was third at the US Championships and qualified for the 1997 World Athletics Championships in Athens . At the World Championships, he was then eliminated in the semifinals.

In 1999 he became US runner-up and at the 1999 World Athletics Championships in Seville , he improved to sixth place.

In 2000 he achieved a respectable success. Together with Karl Paranya , Rich Kenah and David Krummenacker , he set an indoor world record with a time of 7: 13.94 minutes in the rarely run 4-by-800-meter relay.

In the US Trials for the 2000 Olympic Games , he was only fourth and could not qualify for the Sydney Games. This disappointment set him back for years. Only in 2003 was he able to qualify again for the 2003 World Athletics Championships in Paris and surprisingly won the silver medal in the final as the best American behind the world champion Félix Sánchez . This was the greatest success of his career.
