Denys Yurchenko
Denys Serhijowytsch Yurchenko ( Ukrainian Денис Сергійович Юрченко , English transcription Denys Yurchenko ; born January 27, 1978 in Donetsk ) is a former Ukrainian pole vaulter .
Career
In 2000 he became national champion and defeated his youth idol Serhiy Bubka . At the Olympic Games in Sydney , his staff hit his groin and he had to be hospitalized.
Although he suffered from injuries in the next few years, he finished sixth at the European Championships in Munich in 2002 and the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis and won the bronze medal at the 2004 World Indoor Championships in Budapest. At the Olympic Games in Athens he finished ninth despite an infection at his jumping foot.
In 2005 he became European Vice Indoor Champion with his personal indoor record of 5.85 m. At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , he was eliminated in qualification. In 2007 he was again European Vice Indoor Champion and twelfth at the World Championships in Osaka .
On July 3, 2008 he was again Ukrainian champion with his personal best of 5.83 m. He was doped at the Olympic Games in Beijing . Yurchenko jumped 5.70 m in the first attempt, but then had to give up injured. His attempt was enough to sneak a bronze medal behind Steve Hooker and Evgeni Lukjanenko (RUS) for the time being , as the other three jumpers who crossed 5.70 m only managed to do so after one or two failed attempts.
Denys Yurchenko is 1.75 m tall and weighs 76 kg. He is married to the ballerina Anna Prochorenko and has had a daughter since June 2008.
doping
In 2016, his doping sample from the games in Beijing tested positive for Turinabol in post- tests and he was subsequently disqualified .
