Olympiastadion in Munich from above

The 18th European Athletics Championships took place from 6 to 11 August 2002 in Munich . The competitions were in the Olympic Stadium of 1972 discharged. Both marathons that started at the Residenz led to a three-time circular course through the city center ( Odeonsplatz - Giselastraße - Englischer Garten - Maximilianeum - Prinzregentenstraße - Isartor - Viktualienmarkt - Odeonsplatz) and finally to the finish line in the direction of the Olympic Stadium.

Competitions

There was another change in the women's competitions. The walking distance has been doubled from ten to twenty kilometers. Compared to the men's, only two disciplines were missing from the women's competition: the 3,000-meter obstacle course - which will be included in the program at the next European championships - and the 50-km walk , which became part of the European championships in 2018 .

Stadion

In order to meet the further developed international regulations, the now thirty-year-old Olympic Stadium had to be brought up to date. So were z. B. replaced the original seat shells with those with backrests. The original mix of different shades of green, which are supposed to imitate a meadow from a distance, has been retained. The plexiglass panes that previously separated the audience blocks from each other have been removed.

Attendees

1305 athletes from 47 countries took part, plus 816 officials.

doping

At these European championships there were two doping-related disqualifications, caused by an athlete:

Athletic performance

There was a world best, a European record, a junior world record, 23 new European Championship bests, 26 national records , 76 personal bests and 15 European annual bests.

The nation ranking by points - taking into account the best eight per competition - was won by Russia with 225 points. Germany followed in second place with 186 points. Spain finished third - 153 points. In the medal table with the usual order, in which the number of gold medals won is initially assessed , Russia was also ahead with seven European Championship titles. Behind them, however, was Spain with six titles, followed by Great Britain - five gold medals, France and Greece, each with four winners.

The following successes are particularly noteworthy for the individual athletes.

Award

After the European Athletics Association had signaled that Germany had a good chance of hosting the European Championships in 2002, the cities of Chemnitz and Munich applied . However, the Saxon state government refused funding, so that Chemnitz withdrew its candidacy and the European championships were awarded to Munich.
