Paweł Januszewski (born January 2, 1972 in Pyrzyce ) is a former Polish athlete who was one of the world class in the 400-meter hurdles , but also reached finals at international championships with the Polish 4-by-400-meter relay .

At the Junior European Championships in 1991 Januszewski won the silver medal with the Polish relay. His first major senior championships were the 1994 European Championships in Helsinki, where he was eliminated in the semifinals in the 400-meter hurdles after 49.95 s. At the World Championships in Gothenburg in 1995 , he was eliminated from the hurdles in the preliminary run. With the Polish season he was fifth in the final. Also in Atlanta at the 1996 Olympic Games , he was eliminated from the hurdles in the preliminary run. With the season he qualified for the final, but was not used in the final.

In 1997 it ran under 49 seconds for the first time. His Polish national record of 48.94 s was not enough in the semifinals at the World Championships in Athens, however, to reach the finals. In September 1997 Januszewski had such a serious accident in his car that his death was first reported. He survived and returned to the career in the summer of 1998. He won his semi-finals at the 1998 European Championships in Budapest with another national record of 48.90 s. In the final he increased to 48.17 s and won 0.08 seconds ahead of Russian Ruslan Mashchenko . Only Fabrizio Mori in third was still under 49 seconds. The time of 48.17 s should remain Januszewski's best performance, in 2001 Marek Plawgo improved the Polish record to 48.16 s.

Januszewski won the 1999 Universiade in Palma de Mallorca in 48.64 seconds . At the 1999 World Championships in Seville, he ran close to his record in 48.19 s, but only finished fifth. While Fabrizio Mori was clearly ahead in 47.72 s, Stéphane Diagana was second just 0.07 seconds ahead of Januszewski. In the final of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney Januszewski ran in 48.44 s in sixth place, but was the best European ahead of Mori.

At the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton Januszewski again reached the final and was sixth in 48.57 s. In 2002 he won his fifth Polish championship title on the hurdles after 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2000. In Munich at the European Championships in 2002 there was an unusual final because the field was far apart. Diagana was European champion by a large margin, behind the Czech Jiří Mužík was only 0.03 seconds ahead of Januszewski, behind him there was again a big gap up to Mori in fourth place.

With his height of 1.78 m and a competition weight of 68 kg, he was rather slim for a hurdler.
