At the XXVI. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta there were 44 athletics competitions, 24 of them for men and 20 for women.
Attendees
After the collapse of the Soviet Union , unlike before in Barcelona, there was no longer a united team from former states of the former Soviet Union at these games . The Baltic states of Estonia , Latvia and Lithuania had already appeared as independent nations at the last Games . Now the other states that had previously been part of the USSR started, each with their own flag and name.
safety
The Olympic village and the competition gate resembled high security areas. Guards, police officers and security guards were present everywhere, and a three-meter-high fence surrounded the Olympic village. In contrast to this, Centennial Park was intended as a meeting place to which everyone should have free access without restrictions. Nobody could have suspected that there would be an attack there on July 27 with a pipe bomb fitted with nails, which resulted in the deaths of two people and more than a hundred people, some of them seriously injured. This balancing act between openness and happiness on the one hand and the necessary safety precautions is a dilemma in which all major events were and still are today.
Stadion
The Centennial Olympic Stadium was rebuilt with the start of construction in 1993 for the Olympic Games in Atlanta with a capacity for 85,000 spectators. However, it was planned from the outset to use the sports facility as a stadium for baseball events after the games and was built accordingly. After the games and the 1996 Paralympics were over , the athletics venues were removed and the stadium was rebuilt for its intended purpose from the beginning.
On the one hand, the career offered excellent conditions for excellent times in the sprints and shorter distances, but on the other hand it had disadvantages for the long distances because it was very tough. This had negative effects on tendons and joints. The 10,000-meter Olympic champion Haile Gebrselassie had to forego taking part in the 5000-meter competition because he had sore feet due to the hardness of the track in the 10,000-meter run .
Competitions
There was an extension for women in the competition, and the triple jump was added to the Olympic program . In addition, the distance of the shorter long distance was no longer 3000, but 5000 meters as with the men.
The offer for women thus came closer and closer to that for men. In the area of running, only the 3,000-meter obstacle course was missing , which was to be reserved for men up to and including 2004 . Further additions for the future in the women's disciplines were pending in the area of jumps - in 2000 the pole vault was added - and in the area of throw - also in 2000 the hammer throw was added. In 2004, walking was about to change from the 10 km to the 20 km distance.
doping
There were officially five cases of doping in athletics at these games.
- Dean Capobianco , Australia - 200m (first fourth in his prelim and seventh in his quarterfinal)
- Mary Slaney , USA - 5000m (initially seventh of her heat)
- Natalja Schechodanowa , Russia - 100-meter hurdles (initially seventh)
- Antonella Bevilacqua , Italy - high jump (initially fourth)
- Iwa Prandschewa , Bulgaria - long jump (initially seventh) and triple jump (initially fourth)
The doping penalties originally issued against four Russian and one Lithuanian athletes were subsequently lifted by the CAS .
There was also a doping controversy about the US athlete Sandra Farmer-Patrick . She had been convicted of taking testosterone at the June 1996 US Olympics . Despite the result, she was admitted to the Olympic Games in Atlanta . It was not until eleven months after the doping evidence was given that she was banned for four years. The delay between proof and judgment was due to the inability to act of the World Athletics Federation IAAF . Since the member associations are autonomous, the IAAF cannot intervene accordingly. So Farmer-Patrick's ban did not come into effect until May 1997.
However, it would be naive to assume that the doping problem would have been resolved for the games in Atlanta . The control systems were not fully developed, not very systematic and were handled differently from state to state. On the black market, tons of forbidden funds were easy to find. The opacity of this problem and the lack of legal possibilities ensure very realistic and appropriate mistrust, without a general suspicion against individual athletes can be expressed without evidence.
Sporting successes
As is so often the case at such high points, the level of performance at these Olympic Games was high for the athletes. However, there was no record flood, as has been seen again and again in the past at such events. Two world records were set in two disciplines , as well as a world best in one discipline. The Olympic record was improved sixteen times in a further fourteen disciplines .
By far the most successful nation was once again the USA , with thirteen Olympic athletics victories and 23 medals in total . No other nation - like the former Soviet Union or the GDR - could even come close to keeping up. The athletes from Russia presented three Olympic champions and won a total of ten medals. The athletes from Germany also won three gold medals - seven medals in total - and France - four medals in total. Two other nations were able to book two gold medals each, Ethiopia with three medals in total, and Canada - without further medals. For all other nations there was at most one gold medal in athletics.
For the individual athletes, the following services are particularly worth mentioning.
- The following athletes each won two gold medals at these games:
- Michael Johnson ( USA ) - 200-meter and 400-meter races . He improved his own world record over 200 meters by more than three tenths of a second and set a new Olympic record over 400 meters . It was the men's first double success over these two distances.
- Marie-José Perec ( France ) - 200-meter and 400-meter races . Over 400 meters, she improved the Olympic record by four tenths of a second. After the American Valerie Brisco-Hooks in 1984, the French was the second athlete to win these two courses.
- Svetlana Masterkowa ( Russia ) - 800-meter and 1500-meter races . She was the second runner to win both middle distances at an Olympic Games. Before her, the Russian Tatjana Kasankina had succeeded in 1976 , at the time for the Soviet Union .
- Gail Devers ( USA ) - 100-meter run and 4-by-100-meter relay , she also finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles .
- Donovan Bailey ( Canada ) - 100-meter run and 4-by-100-meter relay . He set a new world record over 100 meters.
- A special achievement was also outstanding:
- Carl Lewis ( USA ) won the long jump for the fourth time in a row . Only his compatriot Al Oerter had previously won four gold medals in a row at the Olympic Games. He was Olympic champion in discus from 1956 to 1968 . In addition, Carl Lewis drew with this gold medal in the total number of Olympic victories equal to the previous record winner Paavo Nurmi . The Finn had won a total of nine gold medals with his Finnish team from 1920 to 1928 in the medium and long distance as well as team competitions. Carl Lewis came up with this total. He won his Olympic gold medals from 1984 to 1996 in the 100-meter and 200-meter run as well as in the 4 x 100 meter relay and in the long jump.
