At the XVIII. The 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo took place in 36 athletics competitions, which were held in the Tokyo Olympic Stadium.

Attendees

As with the last Olympic Games , there were some problems and special cases with regard to the participation of certain nations. Five nations were not approved by the IOC :

The West Indian Federation of the Caribbean Islands no longer appeared as a joint team.

For the last time, as in 1956 and 1960 , Germany was represented by an all-German team made up of athletes from the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR . In the meantime, this construct was even more tightly connected. a. due to the construction of the Berlin Wall with many arguments and disputes on the question of the flag, the anthem, the official clothing etc. The IOC had to mediate again and again before final agreements were made. As in numerous other sports, elimination competitions were held between the athletes from East and West Germany, which were decisive for participation in the Olympic Games. Of course, if more than one athlete reported in a discipline, all the athletes concerned had to comply with the rules in accordance with the Olympic norm in order to be eligible to participate. From 1968 on, the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR then competed in the Olympic Games as separate countries .

Stadion

The Tokyo Olympic Stadium had eight lanes, so for the first time eight participants were able to take part in the finals in all running disciplines. In the throwing disciplines and in the long jump and triple jump , however, only six athletes were admitted to the last three final attempts. This imbalance was also adjusted for the jumpers and throwers four years later in Mexico City .

The stadium was opened six years earlier for the Asian Games in 1958. It had a capacity for almost 60,000 spectators and had an excellent track with the usual lap length of four hundred meters. The last time the athletics running competitions were held on a cinder track, before plastic tracks were available from 1968.

Competitions

There were two additional women's disciplines in the competition: the 400-meter run and the pentathlon . Both competitions had their premiere at international championships, namely at the European Athletics Championships . The 400-meter run had been on the program there since 1958 and the pentathlon even since 1950 .

Otherwise the offer was identical to that of the last games in Rome . There were 24 disciplines for men and twelve for women, which now included five individual running disciplines - 100 meters , 200 meters , 400 meters and 80 meter hurdles and the middle distance 800 meters - in the program. In addition, only the 4 x 100 meter relay was held in the running area . There were still two jumping disciplines with high and long jump as well as three push and throw competitions with the shot put , discus throw and javelin throw . There was also an all- around event for the first time with the pentathlon . To date - as of October 2017 - nothing has changed in the field of men's Olympic disciplines. For women, however, there were still numerous additions to be made for the future.

Sporting successes

The level of performance was also very high at this major event. There were nine new or set world records in nine disciplines and a world record in one discipline. In a further 21 disciplines, the Olympic record was improved or leveled 22 times.

As in all previous athletics games, the most successful nation was the United States with fourteen gold medals. The gap to second in this ranking, the Soviet Union , which had five Olympic victories, had increased again. Behind it was the UK with four gold medals, followed by four nations, each with two Olympic victories: Germany , Poland Zealand and Romania , with Germany and Poland won considerably more silver medals than the other two countries. For all other nations there was at most one Olympic victory in athletics.

One athlete and four athletes each won two gold medals in athletics at these games:

In addition, three other services deserve special mention:

The scoring was based on the points table from 1964, which replaced the scoring system that had been in effect since 1952. For a better classification of the performance, in addition to the official points according to the rating table from 1964, the number of points converted according to the current rating system from 1985 is also given. According to this table, which is valid today, the order of the first eight would be identical to the ranking of 1964. The difference in points between the first and second place would have been significantly higher. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.

After a sex test before the European Athletics Cup in 1967 , Ewa Kłobukowska was classified as intersex . In 1969 the World Athletics Federation Kłobukowskas canceled world records , including the one from this final in Tokyo . The Polish relay remained Olympic champion, but the world record has now been awarded to the second-placed US relay, which, like the British relay, was faster than the then current world record.
