At the XVIII. At the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo , a competition in hockey (men) was held.

Tournament mode

The 15 participants played in 2 groups (the seeding list in brackets):

  • Group A: Pakistan (1), Great Britain (4), Kenya (5), Australia (8), Japan (9), New Zealand (12), Rhodesia (13)
  • Group B: India (2), Spain (3), Germany (6), Netherlands (7), Belgium (10), Malaysia (11), Canada (14), Hong Kong (15)

The first two in the group qualified for the semi-finals (1.A - 2.B and 1.B - 2.A), the third and fourth group also played crosswise, the two winners for place 5. There was no game for place 7 instead of.

The tournament was planned for 16 participants. Poland canceled and was replaced by Hong Kong. Egypt also withdrew and was to be replaced by Indonesia. The short-term withdrawal ("premature departure") of Indonesia reduced the field to 15 participants.

German team

The German hockey team (as part of the all-German team ) was provided by the GDR, which had won the domestic elimination. The first game on May 31, 1964 in Berlin was won by the FRG 4-2, the second leg in Jena on June 14th by the GDR 1-0. The goal difference played no role at this time, so two more games were agreed. On July 1st in Jena the GDR won again 1-0 and the second leg on July 5th in Berlin ended 2-2 in a draw. The GDR team had thus qualified.

This had consequences: now the GDR provided the majority of the participants in the joint team and, with Manfred Ewald, provided the head of the mission.
