At the 1952 Summer Olympics in the Finnish capital Helsinki , a competition in hockey (men) was held. The number of participants was set at a maximum of twelve by the IOC in 1950, including the host Finland. The main tournament games took place in the Velodrome .

Tournament mode

The world hockey federation FIH compiled a ranking of the 16 potential participants: 1. India, 2. Pakistan, 3. Netherlands, 4. Great Britain, 5. Belgium, 6. Denmark, 7. France, 8. Spain, 9. Switzerland, 10. Argentina , 11th Austria, 12th USA, 13th Finland, as well as successors 1st Germany, 2nd Italy, 3rd Poland. After Spain, Denmark, Argentina and the USA canceled, all other nations could take part in the tournament.

The twelve participants played the medals in the knockout system . The four byes in the first round received the first four of the ranking list drawn up by the FIH. The winners of the preliminary round and the four seeded played the quarter-finals, the winners of the quarter-finals made it to the semi-finals. The losers in the semi-finals played for bronze, the winners for gold.

Further placement games - also in the knockout system - have taken place, but are not listed in the official IOC report. In consolation round 1, the losers in the quarterfinals played against the losers in the preliminary round. The winners played in consolation round 2, then the winners played for 5th place, the losers for 7th place. The losers in consolation round 1 remained unplaced.

The first game between Belgium and Poland on July 22nd ended 4-3 after an illegal extra time. This game was rescheduled after the Poles protested.
