Ranganathan Francis
Ranganathan Francis (also Ranganandhan Francis ; born March 15, 1920 , † December 1, 1975 in Madras , Tamil Nadu ) was an Indian hockey player . Besides Richard James Allen, he was the only goalkeeper among the seven hockey players who could win three Olympic gold medals.
Life
At the Olympic Games in 1948 , Francis was a substitute goalkeeper for Leo Pinto . In 1952 in Helsinki he was in goal in the final against the Netherlands, the Indians won the game 6-1. In his third Olympic victory in Melbourne in 1956 , he was second goalkeeper behind Shankar Laxman .
Francis was a very good technician who came way out of his gate when the Indian team attacked and acted as a defender.
