At the XXIX. 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , two competitions were held in hockey . Twelve teams took part in both the men's and women's tournaments. Each country was allowed to field a maximum of one team of 16 players each, resulting in a total of 192 participating men and 192 women in these competitions. In addition, two so-called P-accredited persons could be named per team , who can be nominated in the event of an injury. The world hockey federation FIH had negotiated this compromise with the IOC , who can usually nominate 18 players in international hockey tournaments, 16 of whom may be used per game.
The tournaments were held from August 10 to 22 (women) and from August 11 to 23, 2008 (men).

Medalist
In the men's race, Germany won the gold medal as the reigning world champion of 2006 . In the final, the team from Spain was defeated 1-0. The only goalscorer in the Olympic final was Munich's Christopher Zeller , who scored the winning goal in the 16th minute after a penalty corner. With the victory, the German team won the gold medal in an Olympic men's hockey tournament for the third time after 1972 and 1992 .
The coach of the German men, Markus Weise , who had surprisingly won gold with the German women four years earlier in Athens, has now won gold again with the men.
The bronze medal was won by the team from Australia, which four years earlier had won the gold medal in Athens . In the game for third place, Australia beat the Netherlands 6-2.
In the German team Jan-Marco Montag played for the injured Oliver Korn from the semi-finals, while Andrew Smith moved up in the Australian team.

Qualifying tournaments : The qualifying tournaments produced the following results:
- 1st qualification tournament 12. – 20. April 2008 Baku ( Azerbaijan ):
Two Spanish players gave positive doping tests at the tournament , and a large part of the Spanish team complained of malaise. Four players from the Ukrainian team also dropped out due to symptoms of poisoning. The suspicion arose that there was deliberate sabotage. The beneficiary would have been the host Azerbaijan. The world hockey federation FIH decided, however, that the Spanish women had not violated the anti-doping rules and were therefore not disqualified.
- 2nd qualification tournament 19. – 27. April 2008 Kazan ( Russia ):
- 3rd Qualifier April 26 - May 4, 2008 Victoria ( Canada ):
