qualification
The best eight National Olympic Committees were allowed to nominate up to three athletes, all other NOK two. The continental champions of 2007 were directly qualified, plus the first three of the 2008 World Championships. If athletes who had qualified through the continental eliminations had already occupied a top 3 place at the World Cup, the next-placed athletes moved up at the World Cup. The best participant from each continent in the Olympic qualification ranking list (in which the most important results from June 2006 to June 2008 are evaluated) as well as a Chinese starter had automatic start rights. All remaining starting places up to the 53rd were distributed via the qualification ranking list. The last two starting places were awarded by wildcard .
