In the extremely close final, there were only two hits between first and sixth place, so that a playoff between three shooters had to decide for the gold medal and one with two for fourth place. In the jump-off for gold, both the American Kim Rhode and the German Christine Brinker made a mistake, in contrast to the Italian Chiara Cainero , who won. For the silver medal there was a playoff between Rhode and Brinker, which the American won with two hits. After Chiara Cainero had already achieved an Olympic record in qualifying with 72 hits , the top trio was able to improve the Olympic record again in the final with 93 hits.
